Alnus cordata - Italian Alder A fast growing, conical tree which can be used in many situations as it thrives in many types of soils, it can also be used for hedging. The leaves are heart shaped, glossy and persist well into autumn. Betula pendula - Silver Birch A beautiful tree with white bark and fine pendulous twigs makes this a fine specimen tree that provides light shade in the summer. Prefers a sunny position but adaptable to various soil conditions. Carpinus Betulus - Hornbeam The Hornbeam is a small to medium size tree, reaching heights of 15-25m. It has dense foliage and tolerates cutting back which makes it an ideal 'tree' for tall hedges. Although deciduous, they retain their dead coppery coloured leaves through the winter thereby maintaining an effective screen. Hornbeam will grow readily in most soil types in partial shade to full sun. Catalpa bignonioides - Indian Bean Tree This tree make a great specimen tree with it's unusually large yellow, turning green, leaves and white flowers in the summer. It grows quite fast, reaching 10m+ at muturity in 25 years unless coppiced or pollarded. Best planted in fertile, well drained soils but tolerates clay, in a sunny spot, sheltered from the wind. Cornus controversa - Table Dogwood Known as a 'Wedding Cake Tree' as the branches grow in tiers. This is a small deciduous tree 1.5m tall with a 1.5m spread. Star shaped white flowers cover the tree from May onwards and in the autumn the green leaves turn purple. Corylus avellana - Hazel Hazel is a large shrub used in hedgrows, coppiced for poles, i.e. bean poles or grown for it's hazel nuts. It's deciduous with large leaves, catkins in early spring and fast growing to about 5m. Hazel thrives in most soils and is exposure tolerant. Corymbia citriodora - Lemon scented gum This has a smooth, white to pink maybe coppery coloured bark with oval to lance shaped leaves which have a strong lemon aroma. Unchecked this will eventually become a very tall tree but it's often pruned and kept as a containerised tree. The lemon scent is so strong it's noticeable just by standing beside the tree. Crush the leaves and the lemon scent is intense. The scent makes this a good choice for repelling insects or an ingredient in potpourri. It's a subtropical tree that will only withstand short periods of slight frosts. In the UK we would expect most of these to be kept in a conservatory especially during the winter. Eucalyptus aggregata - Black Gum Spreading tree with rough dark gey bark and lance shaped, slightly glossy to dull green leaves. Eucalyptus camphora - Swamp Gum Small tree with generally smooth bark or partly rough on the trunk. The smooth bark can be white-grey to grey-green or even yellow-grey and sometimes slightly powdery. The leaves are elliptical to ovate, usually green to blue-green. Camphora is one of a few Eucalypts that can tolerate semi-shade and damper soil conditions. Eucalyptus cinerea - Argyle Apple Thick, fiberous grey over red-brown bark forming a small but dense crowned tree. The leaves are aromatic, egg shaped, stalkless and glaucous (white wax covering) giving it a silvery grey colour.The mature tree is generally composed of juvenile and intermediate leaves, adult leaves are rarely formed. Eucalyptus cordata - Heart Leaved Silver Gum Tree or single stemmed shrub with glaucous juvenile growth. It has smooth bark, coloured greenish yellow or white with heart shaped blue-grey leaves. It is lime tolerant and can be densely planted to provide a very effective windbreak. This is a very wind tolerant tree. Eucalyptus crenulata - Victorian Silver Gum This is a good all rounder spieces of Eucalyptus as it's shade tolerant, damp tolerant, will grow in tubs or containers and can also be used for hedging or coppiced. It has interesting foliage which starts glaucous and eventually the upper surface of the leaves turm a glossy dark green colour. The branchlets are glaucous giving way to smooth grey, yellow or grey-brown bark on the branches. Eucalyptus dalrympleana - Mountain Gum A tall, fast growing and hardy, lime tolerant tree with smooth bark throughout. This bark is yellow, white to cream with grey, pink, brown and green patches. Eucalyptus glaucescens - Tingiringi Gum A versatile variety of Eucalyptus that's hardy, coppices well, makes a good specimen tree, good for biomass, can be used in flower arrangements and has a pleasant aroma. If left to grow it can attain 50m either as a single stem or multi stemmed tree. Young leaves are glaucous turning a green green - grey in adult life. One reason for it's ornamental use is the bark which sheds in ribbons revealing various colours including green, yellow, pink, white, orange, brown and grey. Young branches are glaucous. Eucalyptus gregsoniana - Wolgan Snow Gum Small multi stemmed mallee or tree with smooth light grey to white bark and yellow or pink patches. Adult leaves are glossy green. Eucalyptus gunnii - Cider Gum A versatile variety of Eucalyptus that's hardy, coppices well, makes a good specimen tree, good for biomass, is tolerant of poorly drained soils and can be grown indoors. Outdoors it can grow to 25m with smooth flaking bark mottled white, yellow, pink, brown, green or grey. The branchlets are often noticeably glaucous. Juvenile leaves are grey-green or glaucous especialy on the crown whereas the adult leaves are non glossy grey-green to blue-green. Eucalyptus gunnii blue ice - Blue ice cider gum A form of Cider Gum making an attractive ornamental tree, the juvenile foliage of which is blue-green and can be used for fresh or dried flower arranging. A good hardy variety also for hedging, wind breaks, screening which will tolerate poor drainage. The bark is light grey peeling to reveal brown patches. Eucalyptus johnstonii - Tasmanian Yellow Gum An attractive tree with small shiny dark green egg shaped juvenile leaves. It gets it name from the yellow streaks that show when the bark peels. Similar to E.subcrenulata it grows in most soils even where there's little moisture. A good ornamental tree that provides shade. Eucalyptus nova-angelica - New England Peppermint One of the most cold hardy varieties and one which will recover vigourously from cold damage. A medium size tree with rough furrowed grey and red-brown bark, The young leaves are a vivid blue but the adult leaves are long and thin, glossy green. Eucalyptus parvula - Small Leaved Gum A good variety for cold hardiness, wet, infertile soils and lime tolerance. A small tree which tends to develop a large crown with semi -drooping branches. It has smaller leaves than most Eucalyptus and unusual in that the crown retains many of the juvenile green leaves. The bark is grey generally smooth which tends to shed in the upper branches. Eucalyptus pauciflora ssp debeuzevillei All pauciflora trees have oval bluish to glaucous juvenile leaves and glossy olive green adult leaves. The bark is smooth and shiney white, cream, green and grey which sheds in ribbons from the stems and branches. They tend to take a couple of years or so to establish i.e. growing slowly, before they grow faster. They also need good drainage as these are normally accustomed to rocky alpine conditions. This subspecies of pauciflora is notable in so far as it's reported to be one of the most cold hardy of all. Eucalyptus perriniana - Spinning Gum Unusual because the elliptical juvenile leaves are joined around the stem and when they die, they detach from the stem and can spin round it in a breeze - hence the name 'spinning gum'. This is also a cold hardy and exposure tolerant variety and can be cut back or coppiced to produce new juvenile growth. The smooth bark is white, green to pale copper, sheeding in ribbons. The juvenile growth can be used in fresh and dried flower arrangements. Eucalyptus pulverulenta - Silver Leaved Mountain Gum A small multi stemmed tree, the silvery-grey foliage of which is most commonly used in flower arrangements. Unusual in that the crown mainly consists of all juvenule leaves. The trunk and branches have smooth bark, green to grey with patches of yellow / copper. Eucalyptus pulverulenta - Baby Blue Fantastic variety - if you're finding it hard to choose this must be one to consider. The leaves are small, blue-green, fragrant and the foliage is ideal for flower arrangements. The tree is small looks unusual, is relatively slow growing and can be grown indoors. It is the most prolific flowering variety of any we have listed and when it does, the foliage resembles a kebab with the flowers in between the round leaves. Eucalyptus regnans - Mountain Ash or Giant Ash If you're looking to screen out your neighbours who happen to live in a block of flats then this is the tree for you, as it grows to 90 metres. Eucalyptus regnans is the tallest hardwood tree in the world but it's unlikely to get anywhere near this height unless it's planted in ideal conditions. Obviously not a good choice for urban gardens but useful where there's space and a fast growing, tall screen is needed. Eucalyptus risdonii - Risdon Peppermint Small tree with light grey smooth bark, with glaucous ovate leaves that are joined at the stem. Eucalyptus rubida ssp rubida - Candle Bark The white, red and brown bark colours and the variation in the leaf colours make this a decorative tree. It's fast growing and will actually trive in low fertile, acid soils. This species also tolerates coppicing and can form a decorative evergreen hedge. Eucalyptus stricta - Blue Mountains Mallee Ash A small tree with smooth mottled bark often with scribbles and narrow glossy green leaves. It's very undemanding requiring very little maintenance, nutrients or watering. This makes it a good candidate for growing in pots but it still needs a sunny location. Not particularly frost tolerant and would have to be in a protected location during the winter if in a pot. Eucalyptus subcrenulata - Alpine Yellow Gum This is a good around tree with moderate growth rate, growing into a small tree and keeping branches at ground level. It has smooth grey bark with yellow green patches, glossy green adult leaves, red edged juvenile leaves and scented foliage that is often used in flower arrangements.
