Introduction to Eucalyptus

There are around 894 different species of Eucalyptus worldwide, offering a wide range of form, colour and characteristics. They originate from Australia and Tasmania where they grow in many different environments ranging from deserts to swamps to mountain sides.

To grow them successfully in the UK it's necessary to select those species which can survive similar, or harsher conditions on the other side of the world. Provenance means 'the place of origin' and in Eucalyptus terms the provenance of a species is an all important factor in determining it's hardiness. We only use Eucalyptus seed from a known provenance and as a result we know what environment the tree is capable of surviving in and hence have a good idea of it's hardiness. This is not an exact science and as a result it's best to err on the side of caution. Having said that, Eucalyptus trees have been grown in the UK for many years and have survived many a harsh winter and by continuing to use hardy species we improve their chances of success. Indeed, meteorological data is showing that the UK's winters are getting warmer which will incease survivability.

Eucalyptus trees can be used for a wide variety of uses including but not limited to : Screening / Hedging, Ornamental / Specimen planting and for Floristry.

NOTE

The quoted height is the height the Eucalyptus tree species may reach in ideal conditions at maturity.

The quoted growth rate is Eucalyptus specific such that 'slow' may be fast compared to other trees and 'fast', meteoric. We shy away from quoting specific growth rates because it depends so much on individual conditions.

All pauciflora trees have oval bluish to glaucous juvenile leaves and glossy olive green adult leaves. The bark is smooth and shiney white, cream, green and grey which sheds in ribbons from the stems and branches. They tend to take a couple of years or so to establish i.e. growing slowly, before they grow faster. They also need good drainage as these are normally accustomed to rocky alpine conditions.

To offer the most cold hardy strain of this species, the seeds we use have been harvested from trees on the absolute tree limit in the Dargo region of South Eastern Australia.
