 | There are around 894 different species of Eucalyptus worldwide, offering a wide range of form, colour and characteristics. They originate from Australia and Tasmania where they grow in many different environments ranging from deserts to swamps to mountain sides.
The success to growing them in the UK is to select those species which can survive similar, or harsher conditions on the other side of the world. Provenance means 'the place of origin' and in Eucalyptus terms the provenance of a species is an all important factor in determining it's hardiness. We only use Eucalyptus seed from a known provenance and as a result we have a good idea of it's hardiness. Eucalyptus trees have been grown in the UK for many years and have survived many a harsh winter and by continuing to use hardy species you can plant them with confidence. Indeed, meteorological data is showing that the UK is warming up thereby increasing confidence of survivability. |
