Shade Tolerant


Most Eucalyptus are sun lovers and will not tolerate shade.

There are however a few that will grow happily in partial shade (although it would be best to avoid deep shade).

A popular small to medium sized tree. One of a few Eucalypts that can tolerate semi-shade, being a Swamp Gum thrives in wetter conditions. Unusual in that the young leaves are heart-shaped.

Rate of Growth: 1-1.5m per year
Hardiness: ** -10 to -15°C
Soil: Wet Tolerent, Dry Tolerant, Clay Tolerant
Position: Full Sun or Part Shade
Growth Habit: Compact shape, dense foliage
Leaves: Young leaves are heart-shaped (obcordate), mature leaves more elliptical, green to blue-green in colour.
Bark: Smooth or partially rough, white-grey to green or yellow, slightly powdery.
Special Interest: Strong Aroma, Heart-shaped young leaves

This is a good all rounder species of Eucalyptus as it's shade tolerant, damp tolerant, will grow in tubs or containers and can also be used for hedging or coppiced.

Leaves: Young leaves are glaucous pale-green, mature leaves glossy dark green with a tinge of dark red.

Eucalyptus regnans is one of the tallest hardwood trees and the tallest flowering plant in the world. In its natural habitat it can reach 90m, but it's unlikely to get anywhere near this height unless it's planted in ideal conditions.

Because of its mature height only plant where there's space for this fast growing giant of a tree.

Apart from its uses for screening it is an attractive tree with broad, drooping leaves and smooth peeling bark.
