Hedging & Screening

These kits are designed as a double row of planted Willow and can be used as a dense screen or hedge.

This is a quick, easy and economic way to plant a hedge. It requires no digging, simply lay down the mulch mat, create a hole with a metal bar or similar tool and insert the willow cutting. Here it will take root, producing shoots in the first year and up to 2m of growth in the next.

These hedges should be trimmed back to their starting height annually to keep the growth dense and managable. If left unpruned, each cutting will grow into a full tree - so maintenance is required to keep the hedge in shape.

Our Fence Kits (often called 'Fedges') provide a decorative and long-lasting fencing solution that can be used as boundary fences, space dividers or even wind breaks.

The construction of the fedge is very easy. The willow rods are inserted into the ground and tied together and will set down roots and will begin to grow. The new growth can be woven in around the existing structure creating a dense screen of foliage.

These fences will need annual Spring maintenance for them to keep their structure. They will need cutting back to their original height (or to a taller height if you desire) to allow the fence to bush out and become denser and for it to keep its shape.

For a more decorative finish, our Willow Fedge Kit with Wicker Weaving include short whips for weaving along the tops and bottoms of the fedge for instant impact to your new creation. The Wicker Weaving also makes the fedge more rigid and robust.

This willow is supplied as 120-300cm (4ft-10ft) whips (also called rods) suitable for planting from the end of December to March. Whips are simply inserted into the ground where they will self root. This is a very vigourous and healthy variety of willow.

Our recommendation for plant spacing for screening is 30cm/1ft. This can be done as a single or double row. To work out how much willow you need for your project and a guide on how to plant willow see our Living Willow Information Section.

We cut our willow whips fresh to order. It is then sorted and graded to supply with you the best possible quality.
